Faith Without Works Is Dead – What Does It Mean?

18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without [f]your works, and I will show you my faith by [g]my works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is [h]dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?

22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works, faith was made [i]perfect? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was [j]accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.25 Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. James 2:18-26

I have come across some believers who think that there is no more work for the one in Christ Jesus. They say that because according to them, the grace of God has replaced what we do for the Father.

Faith comes by hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17). In other words, faith is how God stores up His Word in our hearts. God’s Word in us is meant to bear fruit. The purpose of God’s Word is to manifest the glory of God -because the medium of God’s power is through His Word.

When God wanted to create the world, He released His Word. When He wanted to come in the form of a man to save the human race, His Word became flesh. I can go on and on but the point is, whatever God does, He does it through His Word. Therefore, if faith comes by hearing the word of God, then it also means that you cannot have faith without working with it.

Putting The Word To Work Is The Meaning Of Faith Without Works Is Dead.

But without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11:6

One of my favorite verses in the bible is 1 Peter 2:24 and it says:

24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.

Imagine a believer, having received this faith refuses to put it to work when a symptom shows up in his body? This is what it means by faith without works is dead. The Word says we were healed when Jesus took our place in sin. If indeed you believe, what you do is to speak what you have in Christ when a symptom shows up.

God has given us His Word to bring Him glory. You cannot have faith without working with it. This is different from the works of the flesh. When someone’s good works are not because of faith, that cannot be the works God is looking for.

15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who [d]believe: In My name, they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they[e] will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Mark 16:15-18

What you do should come from faith. If you go to church, receive the Word, and do nothing with what you heard, then that is faith without works. As God’s children whatever we do must be influenced by the Word. Do something with the knowledge you have received in Christ. Stay blessed

Prayer For today

Holy Father, I thank you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for giving me faith to live. I walk by faith and not by sight as I refuse to have faith without works. By your grace, my works shall accompany my faith. Amen
