14 Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. Mark16:14-15
Many cringe when they are rebuked. What they fail to realize is that there is a blessing to receive a rebuke. A lot of believers feel they are above rebukes. A treasure meant to be received with the right attitude is often seen as antagonistic.
The word rebuke is translated from the Greek word epitimao. It is made up of two words – upon and honor. We often don’t have a problem with honor but most have an issue when they are rebuked. You cannot walk under the guidance of a shepherd without desiring to walk in his direction.
Epitimao literally means to put honor upon and then to mete out due measure, to censure severely, to rebuke, to express strong disapproval of, or to denounce. In other words, to rebuke is a way of correcting you based on the honor you carry. Wow! What is so wrong if I tell you not to walk in a certain direction because I know by doing so, you put your life at risk of death?
Wouldn’t you rather thank me for helping you avoid death? In the same way, when you are rebuked, receive it with joy. That is the best way to receive a rebuke. Being full of joy is the best way to receive any rebuke. Don’t rebel when you’re being rebuked – because anyone who refutes a rebuke may not know when they fall.
Jesus at different times in His earthly ministry rebuked all manner of people. It is pride to feel that no one can correct you – in fact, know that you’re not walking in your honor if you cannot be rebuked. Imagine getting angry at your spouse for helping your dress up correctly.
The honor a wife has for her husband will ensure she see to it that her husband is appropriately dressed up (this goes the other way round). The Holy Spirit will rebuke you because of His glory upon your life. Don’t habor hatred or anger in your heart because you have received a rebuke from someone.
If You Can Receive A Rebuke Correctly, You Will Go Far In The Lord
6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?” 7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.” 8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” 9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!” John 13:6-9
Peter often felt he always had something to disagree with Jesus. He was fond of doing that. One day, Jesus rebuked him and made it clear, “if you don’t want me to baptize you, then you have no part with me”. You don’t have to feel you have a valid point to disagree when you’re being rebuked. You must enjoy rebuking because you may not know if Satan is trying to take advantage of any weakness you have.
If Jesus didn’t rebuke Peter at that material moment, he would’ve lost his place. You are rebuked because of the glory you carry – the honor upon your life is too big to allow you to mess up. Don’t feel hated when your leader rebukes you. Receive all rebukes with an attitude of joy – for the joy coming from the Lord through His rebukes will be your strength. Stay blessed always
