The Key Reason A Believer Should Avoid Cursing People

10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? 12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or grapevine bear figs? [g]Thus no spring yields both saltwater and fresh. James 3:10-12

Some believers are fond of cursing people they think are against them. I have seen some of them display this level of ignorance and feel that they’re powerful. There is nothing powerful about cursing!

The idea of cursing is to imprecate ( to invoke) evil on someone by saying that a deity should cause harm to that person. It also means to utter a prayer or invocation for harm or injury to come upon one.

Therefore, a believer who curses wishes evil on someone. There are a countless believers who engage God in prayer invoking Him to terminate the lives of people they think are against their so-called progress in life. Let me be very clear and strong on this point – God will not kill anyone just for you to prosper! God is not a murderer!

If anyone died as a result of your prayers, know that you gave Satan the weapon to do a job on your behalf. It is like hiring a contract killer. You give Satan the permission and tools to work with when you invoke curses on people.

Avoiding Cursing Because We Are Of A Different Breed

54 And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, [j]just as Elijah did?” 55 But He turned and rebuked them, [k]and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. 56 [l]For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went to another village. Luke 9:54-56

I see a lot of believers in our time behaving like James and John in the verse above. And thanks be to Jesus for rightfully putting them in their place. These disciples wanted to invoke curses on those they didn’t agree with. And Jesus duly rebuked them for ignoring who they were.

God will not respond to bring calamity on anyone. God is life, and at this moment, He is only interested in saving and giving His life. And as a child of God, you have His life not to desire the destruction of lives but to pray for the salvation of people.

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:3-4

How can you pray to the God who wants to save everyone to kill the same people he wants to save? It is a work of the flesh to desire God to strike down people with calamity. It is not spiritual nor powerful to wish the worse for someone. You’re rather aiding the devil do his job when you’re not using the life you have received in Christ to be pushing the Father’s agenda of salvation. You have the very life of God – therefore, you cannot be cursing.

12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of [c]the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12

A major oversight of believers who are always cursing is that they forget we are not fighting against flesh and blood (people). You don’t need to curse anyone – rather, utilize your authority in Christ to cast out any devil that is trying to manipulate people against you. Don’t curse! Always bless!

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Romans 12:14

No prayer point can be so prophetic to lead you to pray for calamity to come upon someone. Never engage in any prayer topic that seeks to justify the invocation of evil upon anyone. It is not from God! Remember that by their fruit you shall know them.

27 “But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. Luke 6:27-28

As a child of life (God), make sure not to take it out on people. Jesus was sent into the world to saves lives and not to destroy them. The life we have from the Father doesn’t permit us to destroy or call for harm to happen to someone. You will be bearing another fruit not from your Father if you’re fond of invoking curses upon people.

If you’re pastor reading this – don’t think you’re powerful if all that you lead your congregation to pray about is to seek vengeance on people. Cursing doesn’t make you more anointed. Salvation should be your focus because the life in you is to save and not to destroy.

Jesus never killed anyone. He never destroyed anyone. He loved those who hated Him and prayed for their healing. This is the fruit we must bear and not to seek evil for anyone. Stay blessed
