For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23
Death has terrorized the entire world since the day man fell. However, believers ought not to be afraid of it especially, after the works done by our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross.
What many don’t know is that there is a personality in death. Satan is death. The same way God is life, and His works are righteousness, Satan is death and his work is sin. The works of sin express a life that is contrary to the glory of God.
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Romans 3:23 (NLT)
Before Christ came, everyone was under sin. Sickness, disease, poverty, and physical death reigned in the world. As a matter of fact, they are still in the world. Sin brings you a life that is below the standard of God. And then, its ultimate aim is to kill you. Without sin, death has no catch.
As long as people were under sin, death was the ultimate end. One cannot be in sin without dying.
When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. 13 Yes, people sinned even before the law was given. But it was not counted as sin because there was not yet any law to break. 14 Still, everyone died—from the time of Adam to the time of Moses—even those who did not disobey an explicit commandment of God, as Adam did. Now Adam is a symbol, a representation of Christ, who was yet to come. Romans 5:12-14 (NLT)
Sin brought death. Without Adam’s sin, no one was going to die. Because God is life, and there is no death in Him. He cannot create and then give death.
The Power Of Death Is Broken When Jesus Rose From The Dead
7 For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin. 8 And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him. 9 We are sure of this because Christ was raised from the dead, and he will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him. 10 When he died, he died once to break the power of sin. But now that he lives, he lives for the glory of God. 11 So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus. Romans 5:7-11
The reason death is powerless over believers is that we already died with Christ. That act alone set us free from the power of sin. Don’t forget that without sin, there is no physical death. So if the power of sin is broken, then the power of death is also destroyed.
I know you may be asking yourself, so why do people die? Including Christians? The answer is simple – they chose to die! I know this is a shocker but It is as simple as that. There are many believers out there who think that the whole structure of our lives is to be born into the world, be educated, get a job, get married, raise a family, and eventually grow old and die.
But if you can’t believe right, you can’t live right. Jesus died to break the power of sin. And when He was raised from the dead, it wasn’t meant for Him to die again.
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17
You can’t be in Christ and be thinking that death is normal. To be in Christ is to be in the one who died to break the power of sin over man. Jesus is your life – you are not on your own. If Satan cannot control you with sin, he cannot kill you. Your status in Christ is righteousness. Jesus has broken the power of sin to the extent that, Satan cannot take you captive.
Death is practically a choice for a believer and not a must. Throughout the New Testament, the only way some of the early believers, including some of the apostles, died is when they had finished their work on earth. For example, Paul said:
7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8
Until Paul made these remarks, he refused to die. At least, if you want to die, make sure you have finished your work on earth. If not, live on to fulfill God’s will for your life. Stay blessed
