13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. James 1:13-15
There is a purpose for everything under the sun, and that includes temptation. The word translates the Greek word peirasmos. But depending on the context, the word also means trials or tests. Again, the context of the verse will determine if it’s temptation or a test.
As we read in our opening verse, God doesn’t tempt anyone with evil. There is no evil in Him to tempt you with one. God has only one agenda, and that is to see you bear the fruit of the Spirit. Satan is the one who goes around tempting people with evil. He is the master of that art, and God even recognizes him for that.
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Matthew 4:1
God led Jesus to be tempted by the devil. A sign that God cannot tempt anyone with evil.
The Purpose Of Temptation Is For You To Sin Against God.
And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Matthew 6:13
When the devil tempts you, his goal is for you to sin. He wants you to fall short of the glory of God. He knows the Word carries the power to transform. What he does is tempt you to fall off God’s Word so that you don’t end up enjoying the blessing that comes with it.
This is he who received seed by the wayside. 20 But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. Matthew 13:19b-21
There is no temptation that comes because of the personality of the person. Every temptation is after the Word that is implanted in our hearts. All that the enemy is interested in is for you not to do the Word. And the reason for that is because he knows the Word is the only medium God does everything. If he can stop you from believing in the Word, then he can get you into the life of sin.
3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” 4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” Matthew 4:3-4
The first thing Satan did when he tempted Jesus was to ask if He was the Son of God? He knows that God can create anything. If Jesus was indeed the Son of God, then He also had to create something or perform a miracle. In this case, to turn stones into bread. But Jesus was not sent by the devil to take instructions from him. He resisted him by letting him know that He had the Word in Him.
Now, this leads me to the next point of how you can escape temptation. Every believer has the power and authority to overcome temptation. In fact, God doesn’t expect a believer to fall into temptation. Even though the devil will always come to tempt us, yet, the father’s goal is to provide us with the means to escape any trap of the enemy.
13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 1 Corinthians 10:13
God is faithful. He will always provide us with the means to escape any form of temptation. And how will He do that? By giving us the grace to stick to His Word. The only weapon to escape temptation is to do the Word. Even though the Word is what the devil is after, yet, it is all we have to escape temptation.
7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you James 4:7
The only way out from any kind of temptation is to first submit to God (His Word), resist the devil, before he will leave you alone. This is the same strategy Jesus used to overcome the devil in Matthew 4. God’s way of helping you when you’re tempted is to give you His Word. Continue believing. Temptation has no power to overcome the one who stands on the Word. Stay blessed
