What Is False Humility And How To Avoid It

16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a [j]festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the [k]substance is of Christ. 18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has [l]not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind. Colossians 2:16-18

Humility is an important aspect of our faith. But false humility is dangerous and must be guarded against at all costs. The Father expects us to be humble with the right set of knowledge.

Humility is translated from the Greek word tapeinophrosune. It means lowliness of mind or modesty or literally, without arrogance. Simply put, humility is the subjection of oneself under authority. Therefore as a believer, real humility is to subject one’s heart and mind to the authority of Christ.

For the weapons of our warfare are not [a]carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled. 2 Corinthians 10:4-6

Therefore, false humility happens when one’s mind is not subject to Christ. True humility is when we make Christ Jesus our standard of living. False humility is when you make the laws of the old relevant or even try to mix them with the beauty of Christ.

God Is Against False Humility

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time. 1 Peter 5:6

The real God, who created the heavens and the earth is in Christ. It has pleased the Father that everything dwells in Christ. Therefore, any relationship one has with God has to be in and through Christ. It is a display of false humility when one doesn’t accept the fullness of God in Christ as adequate.

But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6

The true God wants you to be under the authority of Jesus. He doesn’t want you to have anything to do with the legalities of the old. Because the reality is that, if you decide to live by the law, you ought to also live by the entire law. Breaking one means breaking all of them.

For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.  James 2:10

So false humility is when you fail to fully come under the authority of Jesus Christ. If you believe in God then you should believe in everything that Christ stands for. You cannot believe in God and doubt what He has made available for you in Christ.

God fulfilled the law in Christ. He has moved to established His family through Him. It is this truth that has to occupy our minds and not the matters of the law. That is how we can avoid false humility.

If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. Colossians 3:1-4

Our minds have to be occupied with the authority we have in Christ and not allow anyone to judge us based on the legalities of the law. We must decrease, while Christ increases in every aspect of our lives. False humility always has a form of godliness but denies the glory and power that comes with the full knowledge of Christ. Any purported fellowship with God which doesn’t exalt the knowledge of Christ is an expression of false humility. Stay blessed
