18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not [g]prevail against it. Matthew 16:18
Building the church is the priority of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, every believer must understand what the church of Christ is all about to remain focus in a dispensation where many don’t know who we really are.
The Greek word ekklesia translates church in our opening verse, and it literally means the called-out ones or the assembly of believers. So the church is all about people – people who assemble in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” Matthew 18:20
The focus of Jesus is to build up a people to align with the will of God. To build them up in such a way that prevents the gates of hell (powers of darkness) from prevailing over them. The church of Christ is a powerful body. A body of believers who are being washed by the water of the Word to walk in unending victories.
Jesus is in the midst of where two or three believers gather in His name. People are the reason He suffered on the cross. Taking the focus away from people onto other things cannot be seen as a church. Jesus died for us, and anyone who believes in His name is drafted into the church of Christ.
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. 1 Corinthians 12:27
We become the body of Christ when we come together. The body of Christ is the church of Christ. You cannot be a church as an individual but can be a part of it. You are an individual member of a great body.
What The Church Of Christ Is Not
48 “However, the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says: 49 ‘Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool. What house will you build for Me? says the Lord, or what is the place of My rest? 50 Has My hand not made all these things?’ Acts 7:48-50
The church of Christ is not a building. A church building is not the same as a church. People (believers) make up the church! The church meets to fellowship in a church building. Jesus said He is building His church (people) – He is not into building physical structures.
A pastor cannot focus on the building (physical structure) when the Lord is focusing on the people. God does not live in a temple made with hands. The presence of God is in an auditorium because people are in there. And the people are the carriers of the presence of God. The church of Christ is the focus of heaven and not any other thing.
The people (church of Christ) cannot be broke, beggarly, sick, etc – the Lord wants us transformed by His Word. Since the focus of the master is to building up people, then every true ministry cannot do otherwise. Anything short of this is not the reason for the church.
11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the [e]edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Ephesians 4:11-13
So does it mean we shouldn’t be building physical structures? Of course not! There is no problem building, but we cannot get our priority wrong. Unfortunately, some are paying attention to certain things other than the people. We can build, but Jesus also wants to build His church. If the focus of Jesus is to build His church, we can’t be focusing on other things.
Secondly, the church is not denominational. I’m one serious advocate against denominations. Denomination simply means division, and in Christ, we cannot be divided.
13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 1 Corinthians 1:13
The church cannot be divided because it is a unit. Jesus Christ is the only revelation that is needed in the church. The church of Christ is a united body and not one divided. Christ is not divided nor should His church. The church must focus on the people to rediscover its common voice. This is what the church is all about. Stay blessed
